Where To For Lunch?

Two guys in the lift:

A: So, where do you want to go for lunch?

B: You already asked before and I said I'm happy to go to the usual place. Obviously, you want to go elsewhere

A: Umm.. I was thinking we'll go to that place near DJs. You know, that place underneath Myer, no sorry, DJs... the food-court. What do you think?

B: Okay, sure. So, do you mean the food-court underneath DJs?

I couldn't decide which of the two was the smarter one. "Case of blind leading the blind?" I wondered as I wandered off in the opposite direction. Whatever I decide about lunch this afternoon, it certainly won't be at the food-court underneath DJs. Or the one at Myers. Just in case.

Came Here To Write But Ended Up Whinging Instead

I am so over strangers telling me what to do with my life, through the stupid monitors I peer into twenty million times a day!

My Gmail crashed 5 times during an email that might have otherwise finished in 5 minutes. The Chrome help page says I should disable my anti-virus and do a few things before I turn it back on, to fix the issue. I'll be damned if I stay connected to the vast world of viruses and malware out there, without protection!

Facebook thinks I need more friends. So, I have these random strangers flung at me each time I go to the Wall for my news feed. Off late, they even show me events that my friends are attending, with an option to RSVP. I nearly RSVP'd, in the affirmative, to one before I realized it was a private party!

I logged into Blogger to write about something. My memory fails me now. I got distracted into ranting because there was this on top of the home page

You should occasionally check the comments in your spam inbox.

Sure, why not? Why don't you also tell me what to wear today and whether I should have eggs for breakfast this morning? I don't care for spam and if I ever find out you're putting valid comments into my Spam folder, I will come after you!

I'm told by Shelfari that I haven't read enough books this year. Yes, I know I haven't been reading much! Where do I find the time to read? I mean, seriously, between work and social life, I barely manage to read a few lines on my commute. On nights that I'm drunk, only 1 trip on the train allows for reading because the return trip is a fight to stay awake long enough to get off at the right train station!

Twitter's been nagging me to check out their 'Activity' tab where I can view tweets & re-tweets from my followers and those that I follow. What else is Twitter if it is not that? Aren't I already doing that? Stop creating different views of the same thing! More importantly, stop haranguing me to check them out!

I could go on but what is the point? I've lost a brilliant idea to write a blog. The moment of creativity has flown, thanks to the interference from the monsters of the Internet-world. Even my coffee has turned cold. It's just one of those days...

Moving Houses

Moving houses can be a daunting task. When you’re in a different country, away from family and friends, even the modern technologies of developed countries do not make the task any more fun.

Two of my friends were in various stages of the moving process. One family has been looking for a house in various suburbs, without any luck. I cannot help but wonder why someone would be rejected for tenancy but they have been unlucky enough to experience that. The other family found their dream home within weeks of starting their search. Last Sunday was going to be their big move day. The husband decided that, between him and the wife, they would be able to manage just fine. They booked a trailer and a tri-wheel climbing hand trolley with wheels for the day. A couple of us friends decided to help them, in spite of protests that they would be able to manage by themselves.

I was picked up from my unit at 10 in the morning and we headed to Kennards to pick up the rentals. The first hurdle was getting the agency to accept a non-Aussie driving license as id and providing acceptable identification documents to supplement it. We had to drive home to bring some of the required documents. One of the guys at the store helped join the trailer to the car. Driving the trailer was supposed to be fairly simple, as long as you took long turns at the corners. Yeah sure, until you started to reverse! The trailer moved in the exact opposite direction of the car, swinging by the hinge. Considering how tricky parking a car in the reverse can get (for some of us, it is!), attempting that with a trailer was a near-impossible task. Eventually, we decided to leave the car + trailer parked across the street so we did not have to reverse park.

The boxes and some of the reasonably heavy stuff were easy to manage. The tri-wheel hand trolley was a marvel, in so far as bringing the washing machine, drier and some furniture were concerned. The refrigerator gave the guys a hard time but we eventually managed it all. Three trips and the move was complete, save for the little bits and pieces that they were going to move the next day. In some ways, it was fun. We reminisced about the times we have all had to move in the past. The new house was, obviously, a much nicer place than the old. We walked around, exploring the complex and sharing excitement over the various facilities it accorded.

The best part of day activities like this one, apart from the beer and pizza, are the aches and stains that remain at the end of the day, to speak of the hard work that has been put in. One of our friends, who was baby-sitting the couple’s kid, invited us over for dinner that night. Thank God for that! We exploded a few party poppers, listened to the stories of the kids’ days and chattered incessantly over a delicious South Indian dinner of peas fried rice, chicken curry and beer. Every one of us slept soundly that night. Either tired from the day’s hard work, from handling two hyperactive five-year old boys or, in the case of the boys, from playing all day long, we all had our reasons.

Of course, the act of physically moving stuff we friends helped with, was only half the job done. The arduous task of packing and unpacking still remained to be done. The excitement of moving and the thrill of starting over should take care of any pain points in that area. I bet having a 5-year old helper makes a difference too!

I cannot wait to see their house once it has been set up. They have the loveliest balcony, huge and perfectly suited for a barbecue or a dinner-and-drinks party. Which, I bet, they will have. I need to make sure I have a free night on my calendar when that happens.

DOH!!

I announced yesterday that I was going to take a Facebook hiatus. FB friends cheered me on. They must be really sick of me in that part of the world! The one person that challenged my ability to do that does not even get on FB or ever read my updates. Doh!

So, I went to a comedy show today. No, not because I am off FB. Doh! I went because I love comedy, I love shows, I love the stage and reasons such as that. Oh, and because this show was recommended by a friend who thought it might be good. It was alright. I was just too distracted by the comedian - Josh Earl. Guy looked and dressed like a teenager but claimed to be a 20-something, on the far side of it. Sure, I had a few laughs but it's a friggin' stage, right? I'm looking at the guy, right? Not listening to the radio or something. Yeah, he did the radio thing and stuff but it was... I was looking at the radio... er.. him doing the radio or whatever. Anyway, point is... Actually, I'm not really sure what the point is. He was a size zero guy in stretch jeans with legs that could put a girl to shame and side-swept hair (he said he hadn't heard of Justin Beiber until a few weeks ago... looked like he was ODing on Bieber at the moment). Doh!

While we are talking funny, here is something funny. I wrote to a friend today telling him how much it sucked not to have a friend who was willing to jump off a plane with me. He said he would get a new friend if he were me. Doh!

Speaking of friends, I have a new flatmate. Never felt so much pressure to buy groceries. Oh, she's fine and she isn't bothering me. I just feel the pressure anyway. Doh!

Did I mention tonight's comedy show was called Josh Earl's Love Songs & Dedication? I couldn't decide if he was taking a dig at love songs and dedications or promoting it. He made me laugh, go watch it if you must, I'm not discouraging you. It was worth my 20 bucks. Doh!

What's with the digression all over the place you ask? The title of the post is 'Doh', what did you expect? Doh!

When you're posting a status on FB, there's a limitation on the number of characters. There's the question of who is reading your status and what they might make of it. There's things to consider before you hit that 'Share' button. With Blogger? You see where I'm headed with this? An FB vacation means (possibly) a Blogger overload. When one door closes... Doh!

It's Raining FML

The first thing I did when I got home from work today was this.

 suholla

Fuck YOU! And you, you, you and you too!

Seriously, it's unbelievable how many things can go bugger all in one day.

My new sunscreen. It claimed 4 hours of protection, water-proof, sweat-resistance. All I did was run 20 mins in cloudy weather and when I walked into the lady's room at work, there was someone else in the mirror. Someone who resembled me but a couple of tans darker. Bloody hell! A day at the beach, playing in the water had not given me a tan last week! That's how my day started.

Spent hours trying to find answers for a client who won't understand that if he doesn't tell me what he wants, I cannot give it to him. @#%@$^#&$#&

Decided to call it a day and get some personal work done. Spent an hour making phone calls. Here goes.

Beauty parlour for a hair appointment. After keeping me on hold for... let's be kind to them, I won't mention how long... the friggin' machine finally comes alive and says to me, "All our executives are currently handling other calls. Please leave your name and number, we will call you back" and hangs up on me. Hello? Wait! When do I leave my name & number with you? After you hung up on me or before you tell me to do so?

Insurance company. This call didn't keep me on hold for too long. The guy who answered was very apologetic. Why? As part of my employee benefits, I'm eligible for a good discount on international travel insurance with his company. Nice, eh? Yeah, right. That is if his fucking company will give me a fucking insurance, in the first place. Excuse: I am not a permanent resident of the country. Yay!

Bank1. Sorry we can't give you a credit card because you don't have sufficient credit history. Oh really? You trust me enough to give me a job with access to the credit card information of every customer of the bank but you can't trust me enough to give me a card, for which I will pay you fees and charges? Brilliant!

Bank2. Remember how they say if something is too good to be true, it probably is? They offer credit cards with no annual fees. Five phone calls so far. At every alternate call, the girl on the other line tells me that they haven't received my documents. The girls on the other alternate calls say they've received my documents and will forward it to the appropriate department for verification. And oh, they have a mailbox that can receive email but not respond. None of the girls have a fucking email account they can use to respond. If I need confirmation that they've received my email, I have to call. And wait to talk to a new person each time. And the next person after the current one has a different story to tell each time. How cool is that?

It rained on my way back home, could not run. The real rain, I mean. With water and all that shit.

Counting My Blessings

The Kookaburra River Queen - I can never get enough of water and the views. My first river cruise. Wow!

The weather is getting warmer, it's disappointing. It's too early, come on! Hmm. I wonder if I'll say the same in 3 weeks. I'll cross the bridge when I get to it.

Third week and third team outing. Each one different and special. Like RH said, the precedent has been set, I need something every week now. I could get used to this. No, really, I mean it. I could get used to this. My stomach already grumbles for DM's candies on evenings that he leaves work early.

"I am happy", I said when I called a friend today. I was just going with the flow, enjoying all good stuff, a streak of stress but hell it feels good to just say it. Work is fantastic. The guys are sweet. Not to mention my friends from the good old days - every one of them celebrating what I am. It was totally worth it.

Enough counting blessings. Time to go watch an hour of NCIS. Gibbs, McGee, Abby, Ducky, here I come...

A Glass-ful of Juice

Like a dutiful wife tending to her invalid husband (pun intended), I opened the fridge to get a glass of juice that my mother had made for him this morning. The juice was in a tall jug with a lid that you only need to lift up, to open. Easy peasy. I got a tall glass from the kitchen, took out the jug and tried to prise the lid open. It would not open. Try as I might but it refused to open.

I put the glass on the top of the fridge (yes, I'm taller than my fridge; by many inches). Now I try to prise the lid open with one hand as I hold the jug in the other hand. I cannot hold it too tight, you realize, for the lid might open and spill the contents. I am very careful that way. Struggle as I might, the stubborn red contraption that holds the juice in the long transparent jar will not budge.

A few minutes later, plenty of variations of the f-word run through my head, as I look for ways to get the liquid out without spilling it contents or mutilating the jug. I can not say those aloud for fear of ticking off the husband who, by the way, is still waiting for his glass of juice. Patiently, I dare say.

Finally, I manage it. Don't ask me how, I cannot remember now. I was almost delirious with joy when I got it open. The liquid was not so much liquid after all. It was thick. Like gravy. 'Carrot juice, hmmph', I muttered and proceeded to pour the juice into the glass.

Now, let me explain that I am a really careful person. I would hate to spill things on the floor, so if I even had the slightest idea that what I'm pouring out of a container could spill, I would be standing over the sink making the transfer. I do that with tea in the mornings. On the rare occasions that I pour tea from the tea-pot to the cup, I mean.

The juice was like thick gravy, so I stood there with the jug and poured it into the glass, over the fridge. The next thing I know, a hug blob of almost-solid 'juice' dropped into the glass, liquid juice came rushing out, filled the glass, overflowed onto the top of the fridge, flowed down into the pockets of the fridge cover, rushed down the front of the door of the fridge, over my hundreds of fridge magnets, on to the floor. Splash! I'm standing there stunned, a glass full of juice in one hand and a jug with barely any juice in the other and plenty of juice all over the dining room.

My husband cannot stop laughing. Yeah, you think it is funny to? Grrrr. As I glare at him, all he can say is, "You should be happy I am not angry and yelling at you right now". Beat that!

I am not even sure where to start cleaning. I went over to the wash-basin to wet a piece of cloth. There's juice in my hair too. How did that happen? Oh well! I hate carrot juice, I hate carrot juice! How is it the fault of the carrot juice, you're thinking. Well, if it had not created the appearance of being semi-solid in the first place, I would not have tried to pour it into the glass in the dining room. Makes sense?

Mum walked in, calling out to me, as I was cleaning up. She demands to know what happened. I told her I had spilled carrot juice and explained how it happened. She gives me an incredulous look and says, "It is not carrot, it is melon". Thank you, that explains everything.

Days of Unemployment: The Beginning

Planning a trip, moving to a new place... so exciting! I thought I would have loads to fill my blog pages. On the other hand, there is so much to be done but hardly anything worth writing about. The list of tasks to complete keeps growing every day. As I score 2 items off my list, 4 more spring up. How can there be so much to be done? Sigh!

I cannot help wishing I had more people, helping me raze through the mad pile of tasks ahead of me. If travellers could be classified as the enjoy-the-package kind and the stress-while-planning-stress-while-travelling-stress-till-you're-back kinds, I would most definitely fit in the latter group. So, it is no wonder that I walk around with a pen, paper and headache every waking moment of my days. I dare not not get started on my mood swings.

As I am typing this, a lady from Vodafone called to inform me that I have not paid my bill for this month yet. A whopping 3 grand (well, almost). Damn her! Got that out of the way. As I turned poorer by a few thousands, it was exciting to hear the 'ding' of a new message on my mobile phone. That means the payment is complete. There is another 'ding'. And another one, in quick succession. Now that's strange. I check my mobile and guess what? More bills! Insurance premium is due. Damn damn damn!!

As if it was not enough that I have a list that grows longer every minute, the expenses seem to going higher and availability of funds retreating as if scared of being spent! I feel like Rebecca Bloomwood of the Shopaholic series now. The more bills I clear, the more that seem to materialize out of thin air.

I have 15 things on my list today. Writing a blog was not one of them. That's 16, shit! 1 down though, the blog is done. Woohoo! Better get going... 15 more to score off. And some of unlisted tasks. Like feeding the dog. The fishes. Oh dear, I really better go!

Bzzz Bzzz

The one bad thing about gossip is how caught up you can get in it. Sometimes, you get so lost that even the most workaday things appear bizzare. I try to avoid it but some of them are just too much fun to ignore.

The worst kind of gossip is the one at workplace, where you hate your manager and possibly all your teammates. It's so rampant that you hear it wherever you go. Friends, strangers alike unload their rants on you and vice versa. Coffee rooms, water-cooler, at lunch, down the corridors, just about everywhere... if there is a group of people, they're probably ratting on someone they hate at work for the unfair treatment meted out to them. Funny how everyone is treated unfairly, so who is actually handing out the treatment? The happy ones?

I've been idle and wanting for work, for about 3 days now. Numerous coffee breaks, long lunches and some stop-at-my-desk conversations later, I find myself wishing I had work to do! It's all so negative, so boring. I woke up this morning, decided that I was going to have fun. From now on, there will only be good gossip. (Just finished an email to a couple of friends telling them how much I hate.... that doesn't count, does it? Oh well!)

Time to go to work. I'm an hour late, at the moment. Be another hour before I get in. How does it matter? It does, because my manager... STOP! Phew! Close call! Better run...

Language Hungama

Lakshmamma is the soul of our locality. She knows everyone in every house in the four or five adjacent streets, where I live. She works in almost every house and where she doesn't, she has some sort of a connection with the residents.

A Tamilian at home, her nature of work (maid) has taught her to be able to communicate in many languages, albeit in a broken/mixed lingo. She speaks in Tamil with Tamilians, a mix of Kannada and Tamil with my mother (who also speaks a mix of K & T with her), Hindi with the North Indian bachelors in the flat below ours and so on.

Here's an exchange between one of the bachelor boys who was searching for someone (possibly his roommate) and Lakshmamma.

Boy (in Hindi):   "Kidhar gaya woh?"  (where has he gone?)
Lakshmamma: "Udhar illiya? Gate-u open madibittu chalagaya? Anga veetukki gaya?" (Isn't he there? Has he left the gate open and gone? Has he gone to that house?)

The only Hindi words in her reply are Udhar, chalagaya & gaya. Illiya, anga veetukki are Tamil, madubittu is Kannada and a smattering of English words that have seeped into our local languages (gate, open).

Reminds me of my days in Engineering college!

When I left school, I spoke impeccable English, thanks to my wonderful English teachers who insisted on us crossing our t's and dotting our i's and getting it right every time. It was a bit of a culture shock when I joined the Pre-University course, for everyone spoke to each other in their local languages, Kannada being predominant (of course, in Bangalore!). Over time, I learnt to speak a mix of Kannada and English. By the time I finished college, my spoken English included a fair bit of Kannada with a few Tamil and Hindi slang words chucked in.

A few days into Engineering college, a newer crowd, more varied dialects of Inglish (English mixed with Indian languages) and at one point, some people had to make me repeat myself to understand what I was saying. One of the girls, stopped me in mid-sentence one afternoon and whined that I spoke in atleast four different languages in a 6-word sentence, could I please pick one language, any language, and speak a complete sentence in it? After my initial reaction of being stunned, I realized that she was right. I eventually got my point across (in Kannada, with a few English words snuck in) and all was well.

Like a turning point, I made every attempt to fix up my language since then. When I went to Mumbai, I learnt to speak better Hindi and to understand Marathi. Fortunately, I made a conscious effort to keep both languages out of my English! My Kannada-speaking friends and I had fun trying to speak Kannada without a word of English (my Kannada improved so much in Mumbai!!).

The flip side of it was that the two years in Mumbai took away my beautiful neutral accent in English. I picked up a slightly Marathi-Hindi style of speaking. Over time, I've tried to dull it down. My English still has a very Indian accent, with an occasional slip into the Kannada/Marathi-Hindi style. Maybe the association with an English speaking crowd has helped in some ways. Thankfully, I haven't picked up a US or an OZ accent or a mix of all those that I hear at my work-place. It is now not embarrassingly bad but I wish I could go back to the neutral!

No blog today...

Was going to ride about my riding experiences in today's blog. An ORR initiation ride last evening and the ride to work today gave me enough to write home about. Plus, I had pictures. Unfortunately, time has not been on my side. Late in the night, time for bed. Maybe tomorrow. Here's hoping...

1 Jan 2010

2010 Ho!

New Year's Eve always meant celebrations. As a kid, I wanted to stay up and eat a lot of chips and drink lots of coke and watch TV. As I grew older, I wanted to party and dance but only managed to continue the tradition of junk food and TV. The only thing that changed was that I didn't really try to make Jan 1st the best day of my life, so the rest of the year would go well. I guess, at some point I realized that it doesn't really work like that. Like Santa Claus. Say it but don't believe it. Something on those lines.

So, when I fell sick this NYE and had to sleep through the night as we moved from one year to another, one decade to the next, I felt no regret. In fact, I did not even feel the weird sinking sensation that I have felt almost all the previous years, on the last day of the year. 2009 hasn't exactly been what I would call the best year of my life. There have been some good things and I've met some really amazing people but overall, it hasn't been my best year. If anything, it's been a continuation of the year 2008 and a journey down darker alleys.

I woke up on the morning of 2010, feeling refreshed from a good night's sleep. I felt good about starting a new day. I've been saying that 2010 is going to be a good year for me. I am not as sick today as I was yesterday. I had an early morning bath & breakfast on a holiday. A phone conversation I'd been looking forward to.  A reading marathon planned for the weekend. Whereas I'm still in bed, watching all the episodes of season 3 of The Big Bang Theory, I don't really feel like I've started the year badly. In fact, I'm looking forward to it. So, I've gone from the sinking feeling of the year gone by on New Year's Eve to a welcome feeling of the year ahead.

When amma called me this morning, the first thing we said to each other was "Happy New Year". It reminded me of the times when, as kids, bro and I would answer the phone and say "Happy New Year" to the caller, as if  it were a replacement to "Hello". We were excited about wishing as many people as we could. Those were the days when there were no telemarketers and unknown callers calling on our home landline, so we would most definitely know whoever was calling. For the rest of the month of Jan, we said HNY the first time we met somebody. If we forgot to do that and we got a 'Happy New Year' first, it was embarassing. Shopkeepers, the milkman, friends, teachers, relatives, no matter who it was, you just couldn't forget.

Dates. Remembering to put the right year at the end of every date was another big deal. I would be so proud of myself every time I remembered to end the date correctly and not have to erase it or score it out. Every time I had to do that, it was like a failure. It was so exciting to see the new year on the dates in the newspapers. It sounds rather silly now and hard to understand but it made me happy back then. Maybe it's partly because I don't need to remember dates anymore. All I have to do is look at the bottom right corner of my monitor and I have the date. Change of month or year hold no meaning anymore.

I used to make resolutions every New Year, write them on paper and forget all about it until I had to do the same next year. Yet, making resolutions was such a fun activity. A couple of years ago, I decided that it was not worth making any resolutions because I would never remember them anyway. This year, I have one. Yeah, just one. I am going to make this year mine.

Miss Always Right

Time for some reflection. Another boring blog. If you are here and it is late in the night, you are probably suffering from insomnia. Read on and you may just win over it. The rest may stay and be grilled or leave at the period after this sentence.

Hmm. What was I thinking? I can't remember now. Nothing unusual about it. It's a given. It's my thing. It doesn't help that I'm switching tabs incessantly between this blog and pictures of an incredibly cute golfer!

I keep telling people that I'm always right. (Un)Fortunately, I'm right about that. Most of the time. Almost always. So, I think I'm always right. I act believing that I'm always right. Then someone comes along and then another one or two who believe the same. So on and so forth until we're all always saying "She's always right!"

BOOM! One day I'm caught unawares in a situation where it was obviously supposed to be the way I knew it was supposed to be but clearly isn't. CRACK! What happens next? Was I wrong? Was everyone else wrong? Of course I'm not always right, so why is it a big deal when I'm wrong once? Or twice or thrice, for that matter? Well, I guess we'll never know... for I'm never wrong. Have always been. Can't see why not... really!

I'm going in circles here. I'm confusing myself. Nothing unusual. It's a given. It's my thing. I do it all the time. If you're reading this, you're seeing stars too by now. If not, you shall, in a few seconds. Maybe you're one of those people who get hit very slowly. Like the effect of a vodka. Maybe tequila. I like tequila, I'm a huge fan, so let us assume tequila. Why? Because I say so! It's my blog! Remember, I'm always right!

Alright, alright, there is no "reflection" in this blog. I said that in my first sentence, I know. You know what else I said? Read only if you are suffering from insomnia. I didn't exactly mean this will put you to sleep, simply meant that if you are going crazy reading this, atleast I don't have to take the blame for it. It's your insomnia acting up. I also said something about grilling, as you will see if you went back up and read my first paragraph.

Since you don't seem to get off and you're still reading this, I shall stop writing. I cannot think of anything else to say anyway. I'm also getting late to go out, do more important things than have meaningless squabbles with my beloved readers. LOL.

Colour Colour Which Colour

Blue. I had a fixation on the colour blue for many years. I woke up one day and found that all my clothes were blue and I had nothing else to wear but blue. What do you do when you're feeling blue and you need some colour in your clothes?

I switched to green. It was not intentional, just that I woke up one day and decided I had too many blues. I was hoping to get over my fixation but I only managed to get over blue! Green bedroom walls, green bedsheets, green clothes and so on...

For the last couple of months, I find myself leaning towards red and shades of red (if you could call brown that). Red clothes for the husband for his birthday, red trousers, red shoes, read ear-rings for myself, etc. When I need to pick my clothes, I find myself reaching out to brown tops and tees all the time. How much longer?

I wait for the day I will fix upon black. I badly need black clothes - a tee, a pair of jeans, a short gown, a dress, a skirt, a blouse, shoes, footwear and the list goes on. Black, black, black, I need black!

Oh wait, I need some white too. White tops, white jeans, white footwear, white bags, etc. Maybe I need a B&W fixation. No! That would be so boring.

Help! Fixation, get off of me! Help! Help!

Xmas Christmas

I always imagined Christmas as a white festival. Sheets of snow was the first picture that formed in my mind. Then came Santa in his red & white attire, reindeers, turkey (yumm), home-made wine, snow-laden pine trees, bells and balls, etcetra.

Last year, when the husband was in Germany, he painted a bleak picture of Christmas for me. All shops closed, streets empty, no restaurants, no crowds or colours. Rather disappointed, I looked towards my friend in London. Whereas the weeks leading upto Christmas are rather full of excitement and festivities, the Christmas week and the day itself are rather quiet and mostly indoors.

This year, I spoke to a couple of my colleagues in Melbourne. They do not make wine at home, one of them had not even heard of such a thing. Melbourne celebrates Xmas in summer, so there is no question of snow or reindeers. The only reference to Santa was in the email which urged me to bill my efforts on the timesheet before the week was through.

In short, the last couple of years have completely trashed the picture of Christmas in my head. The only thing common across all places were the decorated pine trees and exchange of presents. Well, not all trashed I guess.

I have a short tree that I re-use every year (artifical because we don't exactly grow pine in India, for Christmas). I decorate it. I switch on lights in the tree in the evenings. This year, I also bought a star and a wreath. I plan to bake a cake (my office has stopped distributing the small plum cake we got every year, in the name of cost-cutting). Maybe I ought to buy some wine and make some chicken.

I have been a good girl, maybe somebody will buy me a present. Here's hoping...

My Lists

As a kid, I used to have a list of books to read and places to visit. As I grew up and got busy with more important things, I found less and less time to read. I still had the list of places I wanted to visit and a new list for 'movies to watch'. Of course, I never visited or watched any. It just made me feel good to think that maybe some day I might. Funnily enough, OZ was always somewhere in the top on my list of places to visit... still is and I still hope 'some day'.

I took a break from work today and looked at some random blogs on blogger. There was a movie review of 'Julie and Julia'. These lines from the author made me want to watch the movie:

"Do go and see Julie and Julia at the cinema. Good fun for girls. It ticked a lot of boxes for me"

"But don't take a man to this movie unless he is very interested in cookery. The male actors are just there to support the heroines with the occasional word of wisdom and adoration"

I already said this morning that I wanted to watch Avatar. The reviews have been good, it is all over twitter and someone said to me that his kids watched the movie twice. I must find out why it is so popular. Actually, I just need an excuse to watch a movie. I think this will do, to convince the husband. So, when I read the review on Julie and Julia, I ended up making a list again. A list of 2 movies to watch, so far. How many more will go on the list before I get to watch atleast one I wonder.

Times like these, I wish I was 22, just starting to work, single and in Mumbai. Sigh! Alternatively, I just wish there were more people in my life who wanted to do the same things I do. Or maybe... ok, ok, I must stop. Time to get back to work. A document awaits me. Sigh!

Today's Birthdays

It's both my babies' birthday today. Baby1, the husband. Baby2, Lucky.

Baby2 got her birthday gift over a week ago and is happily using it. She loves it. I love her!

Baby1 got a host of presents, hidden all over the house, in sets. He kept looking, kept finding, kept getting excited. Just wouldn't let me get some shut-eye! All in all, it was a good night of excitement.

Can't wait to get started on my plans for today. Been a couple of hours since I've been up but it's a cold morning and hard to move the ass!

Need to make a list, lest I forget the things I plan. Yeah, I'm a list person... I need a list for everything. Thankfully, I don't need a list of my lists. I just have two, one at work and one for home. Of course, there's the occasional reminder requests I put out to friends and family. Well, that's me!

Baby2 is in bed, enjoying it so much. Baby1 and I were discussing last night. No matter how big a bed you get her, she has to spill out of it. Need to get her pillow inside, it's turned all cold from the weather outside.

Baby1 is at work. Just called a while ago to thank me for another surprise gift he found in his bag. He's thrilled. So many surprises, so many gifts, he doesn't know when it's gonna stop. Well, not yet, not yet ;-)

If I sit here writing, I'll never get around doing what I've planned. Where's pen and paper, need to make a list first. LOL

The Re-union Teacher Invites & Remembering BPS Days...

I've spent the last week, visiting teachers from my school-days and visiting school, meeting students, listening to current lives of teachers, the current school scenario and re-capturing old memories. It's been such an exhilarating experience! Walking down memory lane has taken a new meaning!

Ashwini and I have been so excited and enjoyed ourselves so much that it never occured us to take pictures. We just lived each second of each meeting like an experience we never want to forget. We never will. Time had no meaning, the minutes just kept ticking and it meant nothing to us. We did not remember to call parents or spouses, did not miss friends... in fact, even cheated a couple of hours out of work and care naught for it. It was simply not worth missing these moments for anything!

Sudha Rao miss, Gopal miss, Chandramohan miss, Hema miss, Mrs. George (madam), Rathi miss, Kanakalatha miss, Rina miss, Manjula miss - what a joy to see them all again. They have hardly changed much since we last remembered them. Whereas we struggled to remember names of about 20-odd teachers that taught us over a dozen years, our teachers remembered us, our full names (including initials), our families, what we looked like back then, little things that we did, our friends.... just about everything. Fourteen years after we passed out with as many years of new students and so many batches, they still have such amazing memories! It is unbelievable!

There are no ways of expressing the feeling. No real words that can describe those hours. I wish I could just contain those minutes in a glass bowl and re-live them whenever I want!

I can't wait for the actual re-union. Students and teachers alike. I know it will be nothing like this. Ash & I feel so honoured and are so glad that we got to invite the teachers, we got to spend quality time with them, we got to see them first and give them the pleasant
surprise.

An Extra Rupee

My husband dropped me off at the main road this morning, from where I could take an auto to work. As usual, the driver asked me for "10 rupees extra" and I agreed. It's nearly impossible to find an auto who will bring me to work, without extra cash. We had barely started moving when another customer asked him if he could get a ride to Ganesha Temple in Thippasandra. Our generous driver agreed.

As the man was about to get into the seat next to me, the auto driver asked him to share the driver seat with him. I can't help thinking... hmm.. he has no qualms about cheating me, a lady, out of 10 bucks but he is concerned about how I might feel having a stranger (man) sit next to me. Values change to suit people's needs He doesn't want to hurt my woman-sentiments but he doesn't mind hurting my wallet. Well, well, well! For some reason, most auto-drivers think that it is completely fair to charge us poor customers extra fare because we look richer than them and we can just afford it whereas they need it. It is as if they have a right to do that.

The stranger got off at the Ganesha temple and paid the driver 10 bucks. The minimum on an auto ride is Rs. 14 but the driver didn't complain. He was making 10 bucks to just drop someone off to a place which was enroute where I was headed. It was extra cash for his pocket, not to pay the owner of the autorickshaw as it does not show up on the meter.

It cost me Rs.35 on the meter. As per our agreement, I had to pay him Rs. 45. Now, if I told him that I didn't have change and gave him a 50-buck note, chances are that he'd round the 45 rupees off to 50. Instead, I didn't bother to look for change but just paid him Rs. 40 and he didn't complain. He'd made his extra cash anyway, from the other guy. In fact, he made Rs. 15 out of my ride. Everybody's happy!

Wait! Why am I happy? I just paid an extra 5 bucks on my ride! Well, that's not too bad; it's better than extra 10. I guess I can afford to pay the poor man a few extra rupees without making a dent in my pocket. He didn't even have a rigged meter, so must be an honest man with most others who he might judge as not-so-rich.

Stranger, Don't Trespass!

I've never tried to 'make friends' with a stranger, so I don't know what it feels like. Frankly, I don't believe most of them are really trying to make friends.

I can't help wondering what people are thinking when they spam your inbox with emails proclaiming how badly they want to be your friend.

I've had ones that simply say they want to be my friend. I ignore them. Then there are others who send me their email ids. Hmmm. Ignore. There are those emails with phone numbers, saying call me. Mate, I must be really desperate if I am going to spend money on a loser like you!

And then there are the 'special ones' like these I found in my WAYN inbox this morning! Get a life people!!!
